HIS YOKE IS EASY!

Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light (Matthew 11:29-30 Berean Standard Bible)

Mentoring is one of the strongest Jewish Culture practices. A child was schooled from an early age and, after reflecting maturity, the boy child would be adopted into Sonship at the age of twelve. The boy had to earn his place at the table for him to be considered as a Son. The practice is called "Adoption". (We also see Jesus in His Father's House and asking the authorities mature questions at the age of adoption). A Rabbi was only ordained one or "licensed" to practice at the age of thirty. This is why Jesus had to wait until He was thirty to start His public ministry, and also why many referred to Him as Rabbi. He had to be authentic, otherwise His public ministry was going to draw more controversy than it did, and He wouldn't have "fulfilled the Law". Young Jewish men had personal mentors. Paul was mentored by a revered tutor called Gamaliel. He was like the professor or sage of the day. Most sportsmen or successful businesspeople today can accredit their successes to some mentor. Preachers too. Benny Hinn speaks of the impact Kathryn Khulman had on his life and ministry. Kenneth Copeland points to Oral Roberts and David Oyedepo refers to Kenneth Hagin's influence on his life. Authentic success can be pointed back to an authentic mentor. Being under someone's mentorship in the Jewish Culture was referred to as being "under their yoke". We could say, Paul was under Gamaliel's Yoke, or Kenneth Copeland was under Oral Roberts' Yoke. The problem with the Jewish Yoke though was, it was based on works and the demands were unrealistic.

Enter Jesus... Here comes Jesus with a new game plan altogether and no shame in His Game. "The Law came by Moses but Grace and Truth came with Jesus Christ" (John 1:17). He introduced Grace. He was saying, "You don't have to do it in your own strength. You are heavily burdened by the requirements of the Law, and there is a heavy yoke of impossible rules and regulations that you have to follow. I am a different Rabbi; I don't expect you to do it, but I will do it through you. There's nothing I will ever ask you to do which I will not help you to achieve. Follow my style of mentorship (yoke). For my yoke is easy and my burden is light (because you won't have to carry it yourself)" In the scripture above, Jesus was not referring to a physical plough put on draught animals, He was referring to His style of mentorship or "Leadership Style".
